BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials
BSI provides auditing, certification and training services to the BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials.
Introduction
Developed by the BRC (the British Retail Consortium, a UK trade organization that represents the interests of the UK retailers) in conjunction with the Institute of Packaging, the BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials, was developed to assist retailers and food manufacturers to meet their legal obligations. The standard provides a common basis for the certification of companies supplying packaging for food products to retailers.
Who is it for?
The BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials is particularly suitable for suppliers of food packaging materials to UK retailers, regardless of packaging material type or country of origin.
The principles of the standard:
- To minimize duplication of evaluation
- To ensure transparency and compliance with fair trading legislation
- To continuously review and improve standards and supporting processes
- To promote best practice
The requirements include:
- Organization
- Hazard and risk management system
- Technical management system
- Factory standards
- Contamination control
- Personnel (hygiene, raw material handling, health, storage areas)
These requirements also cover some of the core elements of ISO 9001:2000. If ISO 9001:2000 is already in place, then the work required to implement the BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials should be minimized.
Benefits of Adoption
Certifying your food management system against the requirements of the BRC's Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials will bring the following benefits to your organization:
- Assurance that systems in place are best practice and working to enable production of safe packaging.
- Increased customer satisfaction through certification to a recognized standard.
- Increased access to markets by meeting customer requirements.
- Consolidation of a wide range of certification with one supplier.
- Certification associated with the BSI brand.
- As some synergy exists between the requirements of the BRC/IoP Packaging Standard and ISO 9001:2000, a combined audit can offer some cost savings compared to two separate audits.
